Laboratory scientist Dean Radin describes an experiment testing the relationship between mind and matter. In this experiment, random number generators are used to test whether collective human attention corresponds to a change in the physical environment.

Princeton’s Global Consciousness Project (GCP) is an international collaboration of scientists and engineers recording data from over 65 sites around the world since August 1998 in an attempt to measure subtle correlations that reflect the presence and activity of consciousness in the world.

New Years, 1998, presented an excellent opportunity to test the essential notion that large numbers of us joining in a mutually engaging event may generate a global consciousness capable of affecting the EGG detectors. Of course New Years doesn't happen all at once, but again and again as the earth turns and brings the end of the old and the beginning of the new to each time zone. Our plan was to gather the data surrounding each of the midnights, and to compound all of the time zones into a single dataset that would represent a brief period marking the height of celebration -- everywhere. When this was done, the result was a spectacular confirmation of the prediction: data from the ten-minute period around midnight differed from what theory and calibrations predict, with a probability of three parts in 1000 that the deviation was just chance fluctuation. The scores were slightly, but consistently less random than at other times; they were more structured than they were supposed to be. Figure 4 shows the composite trend, which steadily departs from the expectation for a typical random walk such as that shown in the previous figure for calibration data.

Do telepathy, clairvoyance and other "psi" abilities exist? The majority of the general population believes that they do, and yet fewer than one percent of mainstream academic institutions have any faculty known for their interest in these frequently reported experiences. Why is a topic of enduring and widespread interest met with such resounding silence in academia? The answer is not due to a lack of scientific evidence, or even to a lack of scientific interest, but rather involves a taboo. I will discuss the nature of this taboo, some of the empirical evidence and critical responses, and speculate on the implications.

These studies paint a disconcerting picture of human existence. As we go about our daily business, feeling in charge of our lives, we may be more robotic than we realize, clanking from one neural state to another, feeling hungry, recognizing a friend's face, remembering to pick up milk on the way home, all depending on which banks of neurons happen to synchronize at any one moment. Some scientists have speculated that consciousness may be the subjective experience of these states of synchrony passing by in our brains. Other have gone even further, and suggested that sync may underlie consciousness itself. In a recent article titled "The Zombie Within", Caltech neuroscientist Christof Koch and his collaborator Francis Crick speculated that "consciousness involves synchronized firing of neurons at the millisecond level, whereas uncorrelated firing can influence behavior without generating that special buzz in the head".
At it strangest, that special buzz can trigger an indescribably odd sensation. If you have not felt it yourself, it will sound ridiculous, but if you have, you'll know exactly what I mean, and it's a chilling feeling. It happens to me maybe once or twice a year, and it comes without warning. I'll be standing in front of the mirror, brushing my teeth, and I look at myself and suddenly think: Who's in there? Or Who's that?
I'm groping here for the words to express how odd it is to think about your own consciousness, your own self-awareness. In those weird moments in front of the mirror, I feel how strange it is to be conscious. Here's a pile of atoms, it looks like me, but I know it is a lot of water molecules, proteins, lipids and all the rest, assembled in a particular way, and the damn thing is aware of itself and staring back at me. How does chemistry account for that, for me, for my feeling of identity? In other words, What is the physical foundation of consciousness?
No one knows yet, but it would be poetic justice if Koch and Crick turned out to be right. For of consciousness is the by-product of some sort of neural sync, then just thinking about sync - as you have been doing for a few hundred pages now - involves a stupendous act of sync itself.

Никто не знает точно, но если Кох и Крик оказажутся правы, в этом будет некая романтическая справедливость. В случае если сознание является побочным продуктом какого-то вида нейронной синхронизации, тогда само размышление о синхронизации - как вы делали уже несколько сотен страниц - связано с изумительным актом синхронизации само по себе.

Вообще, я, как человек недалеко ушедший от программирования и прочих нехитрых премудростей западного образа жизни, почему-то думал что китайцы расположат триграммы и гексаграммы Книги Перемен в порядке возрастания двоичного кода. Иногда, знаете, хочется верить в добрых дядей, фей, и прочие мифические глупости.
Страшно подумать что до чего они доведут логичный оцифрованный западный уклад своим символизмом, пятью элементами и прочими концепциями когда начнут настоящую экспансию.

С другой точки зрения, опять-таки, династии в Китае более устойчивы, многие изобретения к нам пришли оттуда, так что может оно и к лучшему - наверняка стоит предположить что в посленебесном порядке наверняка побольше смысла чем в этой набившей уже оскомину двоичной системе.

Вот ежели бы наши руководители, перед тем как что-то сказануть перед камерой, сели бы в тишине да монетки бросили, подумали, трактовочки бы просчитали - глядишь, и жили бы за десять лет уже совсем в другой стране. Да у нас, к сожалению, подход к руководству не тот: руль для того чтобы рулить - нет в этом единения с Дао, в лучшем случае более изощренное чем у соседа получение наживы. В нашем случае актуально проводить разъяснительную работу о том, что воровать в свой карман лучше из доходов государства, а не из его убытков, что, конечно, жаль.
